- Take with or without meals.
- Shake oral suspension vigorously for 5-10 seconds before intake. If a chewable tablet is taken, chew thoroughly before swallowing
- If antacid is to be taken, wait 30 to 60 minutes after taking famotidine.
- Contact prescriber if there is acute headache, unrelieved constipation (difficulty in passing stool) or diarrhea (watery stools), palpitations (feeling of heart beating fast, black tarry stools, abdominal pain, rash, worsening of condition, or recurrence of symptoms after therapy is completed.

Ulcers
Indications
It is indicated in duodenal ulcer (a sore on the first part of the small intestine) and benign (non-cancerous) gastric ulcers (sores on stomach lining), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a rare digestive disorder that results in excessive gastric acid). It is also used to prevent relapse of duodenal ulcer and for prevention and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (a disorder that causes the digestive juices, foods, or fluids back up from the stomach into the esophagus).
Side Effects
Headache, dizziness, constipation (difficulty in passing stool), diarrhea (watery stools), nausea, rash, GI upset, abdominal discomfort, anorexia (eating disorder), fatigue, liver enzyme abnormalities, angioedema, arthralgia (joint pain), muscle cramp are some of its side effects. Reversible gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts tissues in males), toxic epidermal necrolysis (a rare and serious skin condition), AV block (a type of heart block, in which there is an interruption in transmission of impulse from atrium to ventricle).
Warnings
Pregnancy
There is no evidence of risk is determined in pregnant females; therefore, caution is advised. Consult your doctor before taking this medication.
Lactation
This medication is contraindicated in lactating females. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Precautions
Patients with impaired renal (kidney) function and gastric carcinoma (stomach cancer) are sensitive to the drug. Malignancies should be excluded before the use of this medicine. Blood count and liver functioning should be monitored regularly of patients who are on long term therapy.
Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to histamine and in patients with stomach cancer, moderate and severe kidney disease, and kidney failure.
