Primary Uses
Indications
Cardiac inotropic agent (i.e. it increases contraction strength of cardiac muscles), cardiac decompensation due to depressed contractibility resulting either from organic heart disease or from cardiac surgical procedure.
Side Effects
Nausea, hypotension, hypertension (marked increase in systolic blood pressure indicates overdose), arrhytmias, palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea, bronchospasm (narrowed airways), headache, fever, increased urinary urgency, eosinophilia (increased no. of eosinophils), rash, phlebitis (inflammation of blood vessels), vary rarely myocardial infarction, hypokalemia (decreased potassium ions), coronary artery spasm and thrombocytopenia (decreased platelets) also reported.

Precautions
Do not add to alkaline solutions. Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), correct hypovolemia (decreased volume of circulating blood), correct atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), peripheral vascular resistance (resistance offered by blood vessels) may increase if beta-blockerreceived recently. Marked mechanical obstruction. Monitor ECG, blood pressure, pulmonary wedge pressure, cardiac output. Safety in children and pregnancy is not well established. Avoid cyclopropane or halogenated hydrocarbon anesthetics.
