Indications

This medication is used for the treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenia (a condition in which people perceive a different reality), other psychosis (fits), affective symptoms of schizophrenia

Side Effects

The adverse effects of this medication are orthostatic hypotension (decrease in blood pressure on standing up suddenly), reflex tachycardia (increased heart rate), extrapyramidal symptoms (symptoms of Parkinson’s disease), galactorrhea (spontaneous flow of milk from the breast without lactation) and menstrual disturbance. Sexual dysfunction, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, headache, fatigue, dizziness, impaired concentration, weight gain, gastrointestinal disturbance, rhinitis (allergic irritation in the nose), rash, blurred vision, depression, somnolence, RTI, ear infection, dyspnea (shortness of breath), epistaxis (sudden bleeding from the nose), cough, nasal congestion, pharyngolaryngeal pain (pain in throat), GI upset, dry mouth, tooth ache, priapism (a condition in which there is an excessive blood flow to the penis, causing prolonged erection), urinary incontinence (difficulty in passing urine), UTI (urinary tract infection), BP change, tachycardia (increased heart rate), AV block (problems with heart), amenorrhea (absence of periods), gynaecomastia (enlargement of breasts in males), skin reactions, altered LFTs, hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar), hyperprolactenemia (increased prolactin in blood), anemia, conjuctivitis, asthenia (weakness in muscles), fatigue, muscle spasm, musculoskeletal pain, pain in extremeties, pyrexia (fever), edema (accumulation of fluid in some parts of the body), chest pain, flu-like illness. Rarely, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a condition in which there is fever, rigidity of muscles and altered mental status), water intoxication with hyponatraemia (decreased sodium in blood), seizures, tardive dyskinesia (stiff, jerky movements of your face and body that you can’t control) and intraoperative floppy eye syndrome ( a condition in which there is the colored part (iris) prolapse after surgery).

Warnings

Precautions

Use this medication cautiously in elderly, in kidney, liver and heart disease, in epilepsy (a condition in which patients are having seizures), parkinsonism (clinical syndrome characterized by tremor, slow movements, rigidity, and postural instability), dementia ( a condition in which there is a decline in memory and thinking skills) hyperprolactinemia (increase in prolactin levels), diabetes, bradycardia (decreased pulse), hypokalemia (decreased potassium levels), hypomagnesemia (decreased magnesium levels), family history of QT prolongation (problems in ECG), driving/operating machinery. Monitor for signs of tardive dyskinesia (stiff, jerky movements of your face and body that you can’t control) while using this drug. Withdraw the medicine if these occur. Monitor for hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) and weight gain as well, while using this medication. Risk factors for stroke or VTE should also be assessed with the use. Monitor patients with a history of low WBC count or just drug-induced leucopenia/neutropenia (low WBC count). You should also monitor endocrinological status, sedative effects and for the development of extrapyramidal symptoms (symptoms of Parkinson’s disease) and other movement disorders in children. Withdraw the medication gradually after use.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with breast cancer , diabetes , a high prolactin level (hormone in the body that causes milk production from the breasts), excessive fat in the blood, dehydration (less water in the body), overweight,  confusion, drug abuse , tardive dyskinesia(stiff, jerky movements of your face and body that you can’t control), priapism (a condition in which there is an excessive blood flow to the penis, causing prolonged erection), , neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a condition in which there is fever, rigidity of muscles and altered mental status), low blood pressure , liver problems and seizures among other conditions. How do I take this medication?

Place orodispersible tablet on the tongue and swallow with or without water after it has disintegrated within seconds. The solution may be diluted with water, milk or orange juice.

Can diabetic patients take this medication?

Yes, you can take this medication if you have diabetes. However be sure to check your blood glucose level regularly and inform the doctor about any changes.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However if it is too close to the time of your next dose, then you should skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose.
